You can if you want to. Any failure on your part is just that, a failure, most likely because you don't actually want to retire at that age. Then again, if you had any sense you'd be making more than that by the time you're 40 anyway. $40k is just the minimum I'd suggest for early retirement. It's unfeasible below $30k, at that point your only hope is beans and rice and putting it all in tax advantaged accounts so at least you can afford the good diapers when you're 65.
I'll give you some hints. Get lots of money, this is the best way to accumulate money. Don't spend lots of money, spending lots of money is the fastest way to lose money. From there you just min max.
