I have a computer at work which I use for work, which already has software installed, and I have my own computers at home which I use to play and browse 4chan. I don't need to use CAD on my laptop, and my laptop can't even run CAD - it doesn't need to.

- runs lighter than windows for most computers, conserves battery (especially on older thinkpads, sleep mode in windows will chew up your battery quick)
- easier to install most programs, because they are inside the distro's repositories
- better for programmers imo, can make you feel like a l33t H4XX0R
and honestly, why not use linux? it's not that hard to get into, make a tiny partition on your hard drive and try it out, you will either like it or not.
