I'm having a meltdown over here. I got over a huge argument with my family and they told me that I try to hard. When I asked them what the fuck does that means they just said "just be yourself :)".
Am I living in fantasy land? How can people just walk around believing such stupid platitudes? What's wrong with trying hard when I'm such a fuck up trying to improve?

Depends, but basically, sometimes if you try too hard it might come off like you are expecting reward for your behavior too much.
Which is retarded, naturally we would expect rewards for things we do otherwise why would we do them, the issue is people don't want to feel obligated to reward you. Trying too hard puts other people on the spot, essentially.
