There's no right way to wear clothing. I wear briefs, or "whitey tightys" under my boxers. Started in high school as a way to stop my profuse sweating...like wearing an under shirt. It works, so I still do it do this day. If I just wear a single pair by themselves I feel weird, and sweat like a bitch.
