But for most Americans, these topics are too arcane to really grasp. So instead, they blame it on the other thing that's changed that they do understand; social progress. They blame it on feminism, they blame it on civil rights, they blame it on gay rights, they blame it on the Other, whatever's different now, and I think the common imagination is that if we rolled back the clock on social progress then the economy would also reverse back to those magical days of the 50s.
You also have to keep in mind the ego benefits of taking out your frustrations on minority groups that lack the power to defend themselves from the abuse. For centuries the white poor of the South have been comforting themselves with the thought "Well, at least I'm better than the blacks" and that has been reason enough to continue the subjugation up to the modern day.
And the final factor is that these are the same kind of people who thought for a while that AIDS was a divine plague sent to kill sinful homosexuals. That's imagining that a physical phenomenon has its cause in a moral breach, which is obviously wrong when phrased that way but which will still be intuited and believed by plenty of people.
If you mean Europe I can't speak as much, but I think what's going on is a very real influx of very different people that really do threaten the values of the natives and nobody on the left is offering serious responses to that situation, so the people are running to the right wing just for lack of better options.

The thing to understand about inequality in America or in a society in general is that it's a systemic problem, not a problem of fairness between individual humans. Magical thinking is a pretty straightforward concept, it's the basis of superstition and has been a strong force in human thought since the dawn of human thought. To me the general thrust of the regressive right in America makes it pretty clear that these are people who want more than anything to return to a golden age of the past rather than face a rough future, and I don't really see any basis for the connection of that idea with the individual policy ideas other than imagining that there's a connection between moral purity and real circumstances.
You also don't need to have lived in the 50s to have a golden view of them. It's actually better if you didn't, because your view of it only becomes more golden in the absence of real experience with it. And for evidence of the comforts of regression, I offer you yourself, still believing the rationalizing propaganda of slaveholders of the 19th century because it tells you that the problem is both simple and someone else's fault, rather than confronting you with the horrible truth that the problems of the world are all complicated and a great portion of the work lies squarely on your own plate.

It's worse than in recent memory, but not if you look back a little farther. These things tend to be cyclical: the tolerant mainstream suppresses the bigoted minority for a time, until their rancor boils over into the mainstream, and then when it reaches a certain point they get beaten back into silence for a while longer. Certain events, like the rise of the radical Islamic state, fuel the fears of these cycles, too.
