Because most people attribute all these higher emotions to their pets when in fact pets are dumb as rocks and don't view the world in a complex way. Dogs are capable of more emotion than cats, though. Dogs genuinely care about you and will feel sad if you die. Cats don't give a fuck and will eat you if you die.
