I'm trying write a historical fiction novel but I'm constantly worried that its not historically accurate enough. Should I stop caring or should I nail down every single detail first?

Yup. A strange doctor from Philadelphia neutered me about a decade ago, and my sexual proclivities changed over time. Let's see, harlequins, yaoi, and any kind of erotic story really does it for me. Hell, I even started playing Bioware games. Now, I'm no Casanova or anything, but I had my share of roast beef when I was still virile. Can't stand the look of women anymore. Or their smell. They say men are visually um, inspired. That kind of thing, pictures or videos of people getting on the good foot and doing the bad thing, it does nothing for me.
Anyway, I have to agree with anon. Just make it interesting!

It's a long story, and I don't want to steal OP's thunder. Let's just say, it was my decision. And who else but a quack would fulfill the order. Nice old man and everything, Dr. Kimmel. I think he had a thing for femme guys. He was very hands on. Liked to use pet names during our little encounter. The stairs from the movie Rocky, yeah, at the art museum, I could see it from the operating room window. Bit surreal.

Why not just have one of the Eight Power Alliance invent it* and test it out in China during the Boxer Rebellion? The technology is abandoned after failing in battle, and everyone is too busy with the dreadnought race to fund the idea. Then some destroyed mecha are recovered by the Chinese and eventually rebuilt and perfected decades later.
*Britain, the US, or Germany would be the most likely inventors

This reminds me of a comic I was reading recently. The comic was set in Australia, much like my life, but it was clear that the writer knew nothing about Australia. I kept reading, but I was highly critical of the arc from that point on. There will be people that care, like me, but you just need to tell us to fuck off and get your shit done.

I don't usually post, but for the love of god, sit and do a snowflake with wikipedia open. a couple hours later all you have to do is throw filler at it.

It's important that you get basic information about the time period correct, because getting those wrong can ruin the story for your readers (for example, any story where Nazi Germany invents nuclear weapons during WWII is automatically crap).
But things like speech can be changed to fit the story. You want your readers to be able to understand what you're writing instead of having to decipher 17th-century slang. Fashion generally isn't a huge deal either as long as it's not a horrible mistake like having people wearing jeans in medieval times.
