I can't really say that it is accurately since I'm not into black metal, and just somewhat into death metal, but they're subgenres and each and every one of them have a certain something that makes them different, otherwise they'd just be regular heavy metal.

Tool, korn and dethklok and so on are metal to me.
The singers have attractive voices that they can change.
I've listened to 5 different obscure "metal" bands that have the singers making noises akin to a boy hitting puberty and screaming. And they kept getting recommended. I like the strength of metal but so many singers turn me off.
