I was very angry when I was in high school. I got bullied for being a nerd and read a lot of true crime books for entertainment. When I was in the eighth or ninth grade, I started fantasizing about being a criminal myself - after all, if I were in the Mafia or some other gang, nobody would dare mess with me. I watched television shows and movies about mobsters and thieves and started acting out in real life.
I broke into a handful of houses and was arrested when I was fourteen or fifteen with a bag of cheap jewelry and a couple of handguns. Most of my charges were dismissed via a plea bargain but I still have two on my record that'll stay until I turn thirty.
It's been ten years since then and I don't even know what the fuck I was thinking. There's not a chance in hell I could do that kind of shit again. I guess that's just part of growing up. At any rate, I've done a good job of turning my life around. I volunteered for six years straight, have worked part- or full-time since graduating high school, and am wrapping up university with two BSc degrees. I'll be moving on to grad school soon and hopefully med school, given that licensing shouldn't be impossible after turning 30.
Haven't had any issues getting jobs or getting into college because of my record. Still very ashamed of what I did and I've not let anybody who didn't know find out since. The last time it came up was when I was forwarded to secondary immigration when I was crossing into Canada; I explained to the officer that it all happened when I was 14 and he let me in.
I've been there a ton of times and it's the first time it ever came up. Kind of shocked at how easy it was for them to get that info, especially as the charge sheet he had had all of the shit before the plea bargain.
