I properly started learning Japanese when I found out that my university offered courses and had two actual Japanese teachers from Japan.
One of them was a strict, traditional woman with a ponytail who despised otaku culture and had demanding schedules. She said we need to learn hiragana in two weeks because it's only for children anyway so that we can get started on actual Japanese with kanji. She was very fair and a good teacher but she would crush all protests with a polite smile and insist that we could do it if we sat down and studied.
The other one was a less strict, less traditional woman with open hair who loved manga and had demanding schedules. She was very patient and a good teacher but she would deflect all excuses with a cute smile and insist that we could do it if we sat down and studied.
I have never been pushed to my limits like this by our other professors but it was an amazing experience because they really pumped it into our heads and made me realize how much you can get done if you sit your ass down and just study, no excuses. Despite this I'm still a fuckup who dropped out because those Japanese classes on the side plus my part-time job sapped so much energy from me that I failed my actual degree.
