Student connections will be worth something further down the track, so don't underestimate them. But in the meantime yeah they're not going to be doing much for you.
Keep an eye out for events, conventions, conferences, etc where there's going to be seniors in your field. There's often a lot of meet n greet type stuff for junior students (probably varies between fields), try finding some of them and crashing them. 18 months is still enough time to get things done if you work hard at it, so don't be discouraged by that. Finding the motivation's often the struggle. Sounds like you're on the right track at least.
