KissAnime is pretty popular, but they also have the problem that they decrease the bitrate. I can't show you any comparisons right now but there's a noticeable difference, plus the kissanime watermark annoys the hell out of me.
Being able to choose between subgroups is important for me because some groups make really good subs for specific anime while being shit at others etc
People on /a/ usually know which subs one should pick if you don't know
If you want to torrent, the best places are BakaBT (they usually pick only the best releases, can't really go wrong there) and nyaa.se (biggest anime torrrent website)
I don't know which codec is the best at the moment, I'm kind of out of the loop there.
It's fine though if you don't want too delve too deep into this stuff, especially if you're not that invested in anime.After all it's all about your enjoyment and not what I prefer.
