They reduced man and woman to socially conditionned roles, instead of looking at the bigger picture of sexually appointed roles. Indeed those roles are partly socially constructed, but they are socially constructed the way they are because of the capacities of each sex to do certain tasks. And a great part of what those roles implies rely on something that is already there on an instinctual level : i.e protect your children, feed those close to you, save the woman and the children first. Which is to say, on something natural for humans as evolved animals, because empathy isn't a social construct, neither is affection.
