I got a wacom intuos, the smallest one available, and it's worked pretty fucking well for me. Some people like larger models but I don't think you need one bigger than a mousepad. Really depends on personal preference though.
Also google making your own nibs for the tablet's pen, you can save even more by using plastic instead of buying ones that the manufacturer sells.

Tablets are pieces of shit... There's nothing near as good as a laptop and they are nothing near as good as a phone... They are neither.. They are pieces of shit unless you're talking about a real tablet... And I mean the real thing for plotting and all that... But if you want hands-on experience with the technology they are pushing right now I would suggest you at least be able to make it God damn phone call on it between drawings
