Proclaiming an interest in that shit at his age basically means that what he does is listen to a TED talk (Or an article, or the equivalent.) every once in awhile and yammer about it.
I mean, that doesn't make him an asshole or anything, it's just that it's kinda disappointing to see a normal dude sliding down the road to disguising his insecurities with intellectual narcissism, because he believes having an IQ of 106 in a sea of retards makes him intellectual. Because all he has in life to take pride in is a working brain, something he doesn't believe most others possess.
He'll never know why people find him to be vaguely irritating to be around because people like that quite literally lack the capacity for deeper introspection. He won't be able to compare himself to others and find himself in them because his view of his self is a lie. And people won't be able to find themselves in him either.
I'm being a dick about this because I used to be the same way, and I tore myself apart over it. I actually hope he just has delusions so deep that he doesn't question himself, it'll be less painful for him.
