I'm in the same boat. I only got one online friend, and he's become distant, it's always me that has to keep the conversation going.
Recently, he went on this big rant about how much he cared about me and how adorable he thought I was. It made me feel so happy and special because nobody has ever really said such nice things to me before.

Online friends are hard to make, hard to find, and hard to keep, but are fun if you are the sort who can stay in contact, be honest, and not hostile or looking to cause drama. I'm mainly a folk musician and take special pleasure in playing traditional and historical music, I grew up with a lot of music like this in family too. This ties in a bit with my classical lit/ancient philosophy interest, so much ancient literature was musical for example, I'll try to play a lot of it. I started off a classically trained violinist and started learning other instruments and forms of music. But I listen to way more than this kind of music and I'm not pretentious whatsoever about anything, that's just what I play, I was considering learning some metal on an electric guitar or something for fun. For that matter I read other stuff too that a lot of people can relate to, like ASoIaF I like and is ultra popular.
I'm perfectly okay with people having other interests, as long as they can talk about them and connect and we can find stuff in common. Sharing things is fun too, finding similarities in differences. Most aren't good at this though. I do it naturally, there's a lot I'm interested in but can't do or don't have time for as well so I'm pretty genuine asking about others' interests. Like you do web design and programming, that's very cool, I'm not a designer or programmer but considered being a professional web programmer for a while, I know some basic web programming and design in a few languages. I respect and could talk about that.

Ah I see what you mean, I encounter people like that a lot, typically things resort to a few or one word replies and I just lose interest in them since I have nothing to go on - odd though is that I can go with small replies if we occasionally do talk in length, so I'm not too demanding in that respect either. When I had to move for work it turned out one of them lived literally 10min from where I was moving to and now I have a real life friend to hang out with.
Our online community is all but dead now but I'm still in contact with everyone and even if I move again there's a good chance I could move near some of them.
