I normally listen to music while traveling or doing repetitive work or games that doesn't require a lot of focus. I listen to maybe 1 or 2 albums each weekday and 4 or 5 on days I don't work.
If you don't have any friends and stay in most of the time, it's really easy and almost necessary to have a lot of time invested in personal interests.

Listening to that much music takes years of listening to music, I didn't know many songs last year, but I ended up getting Spotify and constantly adding new songs from my discovery playlist every week, now I have over 500 songs on my playlist.

They still end up mainly only listening to 3-5 genres, but they only have a few albums of the other genres they claim they like. Last.fm is mainly for keeping a list of things you like. It's not that great anymore for streaming since it moved on to Youtube links for music and you have to actively interact with the site while streaming or else the shuffling will stop. It also comes with a handy "comparison" feature where you can compare your music taste with a friend and see how likely it is you two will end up fucking that night.
