Because other than video games, it's one the few good methods of escapism for most of us chronically depressed robots. I also genuinely prefer it over most live action series due to many reasons.

These. I don't have anything to look forward in life except watching cute girls doing cute things and sometimes lewd things like handholding and stuff.
I enjoy animation and creative stories. That being said 90% of anime doesn't have that and I hate the vast majority of it. But I've still enjoyed several hundred shows. It's hard combing through the trash though.
