It was gradual and crushed by it's own weight. In the 90's so many different types of rock flourished, which was a gift and a curse. It divided and cannibalized it's own fan base. The older hair metalfags would shit on the other metalfags. Grungefags would shit on altfags, because they swore they different. It became so divided, but for someone who enjoyed it all it was great.
