Every time I've tried it's ended up with them forgetting that I even exist. How do people do it? Am I missing something? Or are internet friends something a true robot can't have?

I dont even know how people find people to talk to in the first place, but when i rarely do it always ends up like this, i dont know how to have genuine conversations or keep things interesting, not even with robots. If someone knows how to fix this shit help us.

Wait until you actually make online friends and you have to deal with your timing not matching, not being able to communicate properly and being attached to someone you are most likely to never see on a daily basis. Then you will start hating people around you because people you like live far away from you while these pieces of shit are around everyday.

I share a similar feel.
I want to have friend but at the same time I don't want friends.
If I have friends at the time, I feel like I have to work to actually keep them while normies can do it with no effort.
If I don't have friends, I feel lonely and I get the desire to have friends again.

I've only ever been able to keep one internet friend. You just have to find stuff you have in common fast and try to be active in messaging them or you will lose them fast.

I have a good amount of friends in reality/am normal, I tried being friends with a robot I met on here and if I can provide my insight he was not only weird and rude (lacked basic social graces) but boring yet still insisted on calling all times of the day and night.
That was the strangest thing he was always awake and connected to his computer, I could come home to six missed calls after a few classes.
Not to mention everything he had told me about himself via r9k turned out to be a lie.
