The only book I've enjoyed reading was I Am Legend, even if you don't like reading I stongly urge you to read this and forget everything you know about the dog shit film
>>
You were probably reading incorrectly.
>>
>>29747962
i thought the film was better
>>
>>29747962
Bloody brilliant book, very short too. Everybody needs to read it at some point in their lives. The film was a train wreck.
>>
>>29747941
I find book annoying, boring, repetitive
>>
>>29747941
Books are like movies you imagine yourself.

Now composing music, that's not something any 5 year old can do.

WHAT THE FUCK DO YOU MEAN?
THAT I HELD THE BOOK UPSIDE DOWN?
>>
>>29747941
i read books to feel smug and superior to people
>>
>>29747987
I watched the film before I read the book and still didn't enjoy it. I felt nothing when the dog died but in the book he spends a long time trying to get the dog to come to him because it is shy and will disappear for weeks at a time and when he finally befriends it and it dies it's heartbreaking. He already has the dog at the start of the film though so it wasn't sad to me.
>>
>>29748010
No. You weren't fully processing and engaging with the texts in a meaningful or constructive way.
>>
>>29748027

Same. And occasionally I read books that Adam Lanza read because I want to feel closer to him.

Book = dark and psychological, exploring loneliness, lust and the will to survive

Film = action, explosion, is that a zombie or a vampire? what the fuck is this shit

No, the Greeks, and then Tao Lin.

are you a teacher or something?

what if i dont find that deep meaning that is written between the lines? sometimes i simply like the story and characters sometimes not, wondering what they have done or what they could have done is literally of the point, if you analyse every single word that author put into his book you arent inteligent but retarted

I fucking love books man. I was a lonely kid since I was 12 and the libraries at my schools were my sanctuary. All these pages were full of worlds similar or radically different to mine; they served as an escape. I do it for entertainment. Not for muh smarts. I read 100-200 pages a day. I find something interesting that someone online suggests for me. I'm reading "my name is Asher lev" by chaim potok. Bout a jew who's a painter, coming of age novel as well.

Since I started reading 4 or so years ago all that's happened is that i developed the patience to read what you would call tl;dr posts.

I try not to be the "reading is good for you. You should do it for your brain. What book are you reading anon why don't you read man what's wrong with you" kind of guy. Its a hobby of mine and I don't like television or vidya.

I think what's really important in this situation is to actually pick a book that you know a bit about or have researched and so actually really, genuinely want to read. Don't just pick a book up, read the blurb and then make a judgement. Chances are you'll just get bored and give up. I remember I did this with 1984 - I hadn't read a book in a while and couldn't really focus on anything I tried to read, then I gained interest in the book online, went out and bought it and then fucking flied through it.

I recently started reading for about 2 hours every day.

I enjoy it, and I also think I become smarter from it(it's gradual).

Just finished reading pic related. Now I'm halfway through SPQR: A history of ancient Rome.

I did read some classic fiction books, but now I find myself veering towards non-fiction.

OP, are you really so soulless and dead inside that you can't find interest in learning about the world? I mean, you can pick up a really old book and read the words of someone who lives centuries, sometimes millenia, ago, someone who lived in a different world. Isn't that just magical?

>>
>>29749310

Because it expands your vocabulary. Also, compared to watching a show, reading a book actually requires that you put some thought into it. Instead of just sitting on the couch like a vegetable, and seeing the directors vision, you have to read the words and picture the fictional world in your own mind, which is more challenging and makes you "smarter".
>>
>>29749310
Because it's an older medium, that is literally the reason

People used to think Latin and Greek were some sort of "higher" language and to some extent we still do, and the only reason is cause they are old and from a culture we respect

kek
>you could either read this nonfiction book on love and empathy or you could read this fiction book about a scientist making a pact with the devil and try to extract some hidden meaning from it

It is not about hidden meanings. It is about thinking for yourself. Non-fiction just tells you stuff, fiction make you think about stuff.
>>
>>29749339
Disagree with fucking what? I'm just saying that I read a history book that took me 40 hours to finish and now I only remember a few things from it, and yet if I had spent that equal amount of time watching a television show or playing a video game I would have remembered thousands of things about them, down to details of individual levels or plot points of every single episode

>>
>>29749560

I have recently turned towards non-fiction books myself, but you are wrong to dismiss fiction as you do.

Fiction books, especially old ones, tend to be filled with archaic words and overly complex sentences. It kind of takes a lot of effort to make sense of it.
>>
>>29749498
l know what you're talking about. But my brain making up a movie on itself without any effort of myself , how does this do anything for me in the long run? ls it supposed to train my imagination? How do we know if it actually does that? l could be reading investment strategies instead.

most of the statements he makes about people not having access to resources is entirely false
>>

>>
>>29749701

Jared Diamond said that zebras would be difficult to domesticate.

You have presented a picture with zebras. I don't know if these particular zebras have been tamed or domesticated. If they were domesticated, that doesn't mean it was necessarily viable to domesticate them back in the day. And if it was, you have disproven a single point of a book released in 1997. You have not invalidated the book as a whole.

>>29747962

>>
>>29749736

i can sit on a computer for hours reading on 4chan or wikipedia and be perfectly fine with it. i can't really do that with books. i have read some books that i couldn't put down and time would fly by while reading it, but those types of books are the exception. once or twice a year i get in a mood to read a book or two, but that's pretty much it, i can't force myself to do it.

Yes it gives me knowledge since I rarely read fiction - waste of time and I don't care what some faggot has to say about metaphors and shit.

I read the things I'm interested in. It takes a bit of time to get in to as a habit but it's worth it.

Ask yourself: What do I want to KNOW right now, what piques my interest? Then look up lists online containing related books. Keep consistent in your reading material and you will learn well as books often overlap in the same areas.

Can anyone give me feedback on these book series? I'm thinking of reading them, just wanted to know which ones I should read first.

The Demon Cycle series by Peter V. Brett
The Night Angel trilogy by Brent Weeks
The Broken Empire series by Mark Lawrence
The First Law series by Joe Abercrombie
The Stormlight Archive by Brandon Sanderson
The Gentleman Bastard series by Scott Lynch
The Powder Mage series by Brain McClellan
The Lightbringer series by Brent Weeks
The Raven Shadow series by Anthony Ryan
The Magicans series by Lev Grossman
The Chronicle of the Unhewn Throne series by Brain Staveley
The Malazan Book of the Fallen series by Steven Erikson
The Dagger and the Coin series by Daniel Abraham.

I really would like a book series that can rival the Kingkiller Chronicle series by Patrick Rothfuss, I absolutely adored that series. I'm still waiting on the third book but the first two books in the series were phenomenal, I couldn't put them down once I started reading them. I want a book series that will give me that sensation again, a really good fantasy series that draws me in.

Also don't diss fiction, I love fictional works and just because it isn't "real" doesn't mean people can't enjoy it. Escapism is something many people do, you can't find escapism in boring non-fictional works talking about the roman empire and what not. All that stuff actually happened, and while it is knowledgeable you are reading it for knowledge and not for escapism.

Two completely different concepts

Are you that anon I talked to about Blood Meridian a few days ago? I'm on chapter 7 of Notes from Underground now, I really like the style it's written in

I mean deep plot, not deep meaning

I don't understand books.

To me art is a medium that objectively adds to an experience.

Given equal quality (rare) IE: anime > manga > light novel

Having the ability to have voice actors, music, animation, visuals, etc, all improves source.

That being said, it's very common for manga/ln to be better than their above because shitty adaptations/budget.

I read books for escapism not for knowledge. Really good novels make me feel like I've pretty much transplanted myself inside another person's body and mind for a dozen hours, it's top tier escapism

You obviously read to escape reality. You re-enter it without having changed yourself significantly, apart from shortening the remaining time you have on earth.

A good book will change the way you perceive reality. They are vehicles for philosophies and ideologies

This is easily one of the most fedoracore misinformed posts I've ever read here.

>I read non fiction because it is superior to escapism fiction
>Reading for knowledge is superior to reading for escapism

Don't let the fedora squeeze your head, you can like non fiction and not be an asshole towards people who enjoy escapism and fiction. I personally like BOTH non-fiction and fiction, but I enjoy fiction immensely but that doesn't mean I go around bashing people who love non-fiction.

I didn't say anything about nonfiction. I don't read nonfiction myself, except for uni homework. Most classics are fiction, they convey ideas through fictional stories. See Dostoevsky, Wilde, etc

I like reading. To me it's more engaging than watching or listening to something.
YMMV, though

I am a big fan of audiobooks. I don't have time to run eyes over paper for hours, but work with my hands with headphones on,so I appreciate the escape they offer, especially when the reader is good and through acting out the voices of the characters makes a book come alive. I get them through audible.com, but there are passable free ones here...

I keep trying to get into reading, but it's hard. I used to spend days and days reading books, but now I haven't finished a book in like two years or so.

While the wagies slave away,
the NEET gathers knowledge, and develops theories,
that rival the great scientists like Newton and Einstein.

>tfw there's a book on how to read a book

>tfw you realise there are no must-read books because millions of people lived enjoyable lives without having read them

Actual helpful books for dealing with people:

-When I say no, I feel guilty
-What Every Body is saying

I, for one, am glad to see so many fellow reader-bots here, of all places.
