>be Canadian
>people on the street always nice here
>everyone here smiles and talks to each other

>go to england
>look at a guy on street
>was about to smile
>he has this 'I'm gonna kill you look on his face staring me down'
>look away cause he isn't that guy I should smile that
>thought it was just that one guy
>later see another guy
>stare at him for a bit
>"WHAT BRUV, WHAT YOU LOOKIN AT"
>quickly put my head down
>cousin I was with just tells me to ignore him and that he seems like he's the type of guy to carry a knife
>guy keeps talking shit slowly approaching us
>he eventually gives up and walks away

Why is england full of rude people? Going from Canada to england was like going to a third world country. Its crap there.
>>
>>29746390
Unless you're taking a dog for a walk out of the city. Then everyone wants to know how your fucking mum is doing and your dog's native cultures. Why're you smiling at strangers anyway?
>>
>>29746390
Why the fuck would you want to smile at someone on the street? What purpose does that have?
>>
Its only really like that in the south, the further north you go people tend to be friendlier.

Moving from Kent to Hull for university was fucking terrifying as the concept of strangers making conversation at bus stops or in queues was absolutely alien to me.
>>
>>29746714
it's difficult to understand if you're autistic or have asperger syndrome, but when two people cross each other on the streets the general instinct as a human is to atleast say hi.
>>
>>29746390
In Britain you have to choose those that you wish to smile at carefully. The guy you described sounds like scum and you should steer clear of his type. Most people will just smile back and if they're in a really good mood, might even start a conversation with you.
>>
>>29746742
Funny, in the states it's the opposite.
In the south everyone is friendly and polite up north everyone is a pretentious rude faggot.
>>
I agree, it is shit here. Most of us are pretty reserved.

>>29746742
I'm from the south and I agree.

>>29746755
>doesn't understand cultural differences
>calls others autistic

In cities you can easily cross like a thousand people in a day, do you seriously say hi to each and every one of them?
>>
>>29746742
Hey Hull Uni Bro. What are you studying?
>>
>>29746798
Women's studies

What about you?
>>
>>29746798
Technically bio sciences but I'm planning on switching my course over to marine biology as soon as I can
>>
>>29746390
its more of an urban thing
city people hate everyone around them because they ALWAYS have to be around strangers and they are all assholes
>>
>>29746821
Autism studies. I just finished first year.
>>
I grew up in London and moved north.
I still have a mild panic attack when a stranger speaks to me. It goes against everything I learned growing up.
>>
>>29746755
I can't do that on a busy street, I would be saying hi every second.

I know how you feel OP.

I went to the US from Canada and everyone was so rude there. People rolled their eyes when I smiled at them, didn't even thank or acknowledge their bus drivers, etc. I did that little dance on the side walk when you try to pass someone but keep bumping into each other. I said "sorry", expecting a smile and a sorry back. Instead he got in my face yelled "yeah you better be". I felt like crying. I hate the rest of the world.
>>
>>29746677
It's a canada/american midwest thing. I have a canadian friend who spent months smiling and waving to people on the street in the big city where I live.

He was very confused why no one ever smiled back.
>>
OP this is a Canadian only thing. The nice stereotype is for a reason. In Canada yes, you smile and say hi to anybody who is near you. It is normal, but not other countries.
>>
>>29746853
Not gonna lie. You sound like a bit of a faggot. You should have smacked him one right in the teeth. But I agree with you, people can be arseholes sometimes.

Iowa is basically the United States version of Canada. Never once have I met a rude person here even though I'm black. The teens here are basically like UK people. Fucking annoying and racial to a degree.
>>
>>29746390
>smiling and staring at strangers
what possible cognitive methods of reason did you take to arrive at the conclusion that this is a normal and acceptable thing to do?

I asked a jap exchange student why she chose Ottawa out of any other Canadian city.

> "I can walk downtown by myself at night and the people are so nice here."
> "So the nice Canadians stereotype is true?"
> "It's not a stereotype if it's the true."

I think it's something about surviving harsh Canadian winters that makes us feel we have an instant connection with someone waiting at the bus stop.
>>
>>29746390

Rain. You're obviously not from Vancouver. Most people there are like you just described all winter until the sun comes out, which only lasts like, a week at a time if you're lucky.

Been pretty dry the last few years though. Even the bog caught fire.
>>
>>29746966
Bog as in the colloquial term for toilet or bog as in a water saturated piece of land? Either way, pretty cool I guess.
>>
>>29746853
>thanking bus drivers

I swear this is a Canadian only thing, I never heard of doing this until I went to Vancouver
>>
>>29747049
Floridian here. We always did that growing up. I still do even though i live in the north now.
>>
>>29746966
I'm from van too, and I smile/nod at people I make eye contact with, very few do it back. Though we do thank our buss drivers and say sorry alot still.
>>
>>29747049
north east us here. who doesn't thank bus drivers?
>>
Go to Ireland, then. People are nice there.
>>
>>29747049
People in the UK do about half the time, more if they're older.

>Visit Puerto Rico

Hull Uni bros, just finished my degree after spending three years passed out on the Welly floor.
>>
>>29746390
This is why i can't take any advice from North Americans on how to get friends or a gf, as i never had any of these.
You don't approach people on the street and you don't smile for no reason. I'm not even a Brit, but you just don't do that shit, especially in big cities.
The most you can do is at a bus or tram stop: ask for a cigarette, what time is it or if someone has seen the bus or tram go by. Even then, most people ignore you.

did you meet luie?

>>

Yep, perpetuate the behavior. You are part of the problem.

New Yorker here, people have to be aggressively indifferent or else you get bogged down in all kinds of shit. Just this morning I was at Dunkin Donuts getting a straw and some middle-aged woman was like "oh sorry my head was in your way, nice of you to ask me to move." I'm not going to ask her to move just so I can get a straw. But replying to her bitchy attitude would have made me late for work.
Then there are the homeless constantly asking for money. The tourists who state up at the buildings or ask me how to get to Bryant Park when we're in goddamn Chinatown. Police officers just looking for a reason to stop you. People trying to sell you overpriced touristy bus trips or knock-off jewelry. Being polite to people here isn't worth the energy expanded.
So I'm sorry when I'm in a small town and people think I'm rude for not stopping and asking how your sister's kid's birthday party went.
>>
>>29747307
>who doesn't thank bus drivers?

Normal people. I'm paying to ride the bus, why would I thank the driver?
>>
>>29747968
No you retard its a self defense mechanism, smiling shows weakness and vulnerability, which is dangerous in a big city. Go live in the big city with muggers and junkies and you'll see
>>
>>29747343
I'm puertorican and I can confirm people here are friendly. The only rude people we have are beggars who expect you to always give them money and a lot of the folk off the projects
>>
>stare at him for a bit
>"WHAT BRUV, WHAT YOU LOOKIN AT"
should have responded with
>''im lookin right at you ya cunt''
>>
>>29747968
>it's somehow a bad thing
No one bothers anyone, other than non-asian tourists, drunk cunts and hobos.
>>
>>29747999
>"oh sorry my head was in your way, nice of you to ask me to move."

I would have just said 'Whatever' and walk away.
>>
>>29746878
>canada/american
It's also a french thing. It's quite usual to drop a "hello" when passing by someone in a not too crowded place.
>>
>>29748099
But Norman I want to consider and contemplate talking to your for 10 minutes, agonizing in my head trying to figure out how to interest and entice you. And then I want to bother all over you.

KHHHV reporting in. And i'll really never understand this shit about randomly talking to people, it's just real fucking creepy.
>>
>>29747999
Fellow New Yorker. People are generally indifferent but occasionally you get the assholes and the polite people. I overall absolutely hate being in crowds or having to interact with strangers so I'll become a motherfucking football player if it means avoiding any form of physical or even eye contact. I will however happily return someone's greeting or just apologize to get someone to shut the fuck up if they get pissy about something as mundane as grazing their arm. Packed train are my absolute nightmare.
>>
>>29746390
Depends where you go you dense mother fucker
>>
>>29747110
Same here. Still in Florida though. I always thanked my bus drivers. One time, they gave me $15 on Valentine's day.
>>
>>29747327
I find its mostly if the bus is nearly empty/just in quiet residential areas
>>
>>29748700
Shit. Meant to say 'one' instead of 'they'.

>grow up in Canada
>In a tiny military base for families in the army
>The men all have PTSD and drinking problems
>Most women are god damn sluts with actual mental illnesses that they pass on to their children
>Although I lived on the base I didn't go to the schools there and went to one a little ways off
>Really fun, I was the most popular kid their
>My dad went overseas (he's alive still)
>Family councillor knew I had depression
>Didn't prescribe me anything, just told my mother to watch over me
>Due to some travel issues I wouldn't be able to go to the school I was in

>Literally fucking hell. The worst possible kids with the most asinine excuses to vent lived there
>Depression only gets worse
>It's Grade 5
>Make a friend
>He's Portuguese and Brazilian
>The most happy go lucky friend you can meet
>we were like pees and carrots
>Start high school in grade 8
>I never bother socialising with anyone since I have my friend
>Even though we aren't in any classes together and we only see each other for 20 minutes in the school day
>While everyone establishes themselves I just stagnate
>All of the kids from our school end up the roughest and meanest.
>My friends mom gets into a fight with the husband
>Weren't even his kids, she was just sucking his dick for a place to lay her children in
>He basically tells her and her children to fuck off
>After that year my friend moves away
>he becomes really angry
>Can't socialise with anyone

I'll skip most of high school

>Graduate
>Make it to Ottawa
>Meet some people who I used to know
>Go to a party
>Everyone is incredibly nice
>They don't judge you for everything you say
>They don't ask you to fact check everything you know
>They all don't have a sarcastic bitchy tone
>A guy asked to keep in touch with me
>They actually text me back

They all moved back and now I'm back at square 1 but this is still such an improvement from everything i have been led to believe about people.
