Woodford is nice bourbon. It's not a bad place to start if you plan on going upscale further on, but I'd personally recommend starting with something a little less expensive and more general, like Bulleit or Buffalo Trace. Both decent bourbons, but far from the upper end. After that, I'd say go Woodford. It's nice to get a sense for what a smoother bourbon is, one that's bona fide decent to take neat; straight.
After that. look in the realm of single barrel, small batch, and 8-10yr aged bourbons. Then you'll really start to get an appreciation for what changes over time in a bourbon that makes one so much nicer than another.
