I have a tech degree and work in my field. I make more than most people my age. However I live in a very expensive area. I live with my parents rent-free and they pay for most of the groceries, my car insurance, my Internet, my cell phone. In order to do that I spend 2 hours commuting every day.
If I wanted my own studio or 1BR apartment, which was actually close to my office, about half my pay would go into rent. Taxes and health care take up a third. If I was paying for all those smaller necessities I mentioned earlier (I am not allowed to have my job without Internet access and a cell phone, they aren't fucking optional,) in effect I would have about 10% of my total income left over at the end of the month.
And most people are doing worse.
Really I don't know what to say, the economy is completely broken for the American middle class, and young people got fucked the hardest. I'm strongly considering taking my savings, buying a shack out in a State like Wyoming or one of the Dakotas, and learning to live off the land. Doing some freelance work to afford a satellite net connection. I work 50 hours a week and it hardly seems "worth it."

Costco never called me even fore entry or low level jobs, the krogers next to me is full and there is one in the awful end of town(near projects) but it's 30 minutes away and people get shot working at that one.
