From my understanding of shotguns, would that magazine even work? I thought that the shells were stored in the tube where the pump is. And the magazine is in line with where the shells are ejected, which would cause them not to chamber properly.

It would. Here is an animation showing the action of a semi-automatic rifle. Shotgun shells load and eject the same way and with a pump action shotgun, the manual pumping of the grip provides the energy to eject and load shells. In a semi-automatic firearm, the recoil from the shell firing is used to load the next shell.

I knew how shells/rounds are chambered but I didn't know if the magazine would line up correctly with the mechanism that chambers each shell. It just looks off to me.
