You are correct, it can be multiple things such as a career, hobby, or tool. But those photographers behind the camera aren't jerking off when filming, they're concentrating on getting a good shot, my point still stands.
I consider porn to also have an aesthetic aspect. I sometimes watched Kink.com videos just for the choreography. My porn folder also contains a collection of images which I never fap to, they are just nice and relaxing to look at.
It's just there for when I want to get my mind off things. They come back moments after I'm done but hey, for a while, I wasn't feeling sorry for myself.

I jerk off solely to stories in my head sometimes. Seeing as I'm a writer sometimes they end up getting...really detailed.
I'll spend too much time on the setup and the payoff isn't as great if I keep jerking it during that time. So I keep my hands off until my character in-story is about to stick his dick in a chick.
