The Mourning Dove

I first heard the mourning dove's coo in a computer game. "Crypt Worlds: Your Darkest Desires" it was called, and in it you wandered around a 3D world full of grainy sprites and JPEG characters. And as you would walk through the solid forest texture pathway, in the distance, the coo of a mourning dove playing on soundtrack loop. And playing that game, that was the first time I heard it. But I did not know it was a mourning dove at the time.
The second time I heard the mourning dove's coo was in front of the theater department. It was the morning, I was waiting to go to class, I had an acting class inside the theater at 11:15. And when I heard it, instantly my ears perked up. It was a familiar sound. After a brief mental struggle I remembered the source. And I got up and went to go look for the bird, the source of the real, physical sound, the mourning dove's beautiful coo, and the only glimpse I could catch was through branches high up in an birch tree, and I saw the soft inflation of his chest as he performed his call. And I stayed there and I listened until my classmates started to flood into the area, and I got several recordings of the bird for later, because I was so mystified by it. But I did not hear the mourning dove in person again.
Until tonight, in the new home, where there is a mourning dove perched in a tree somewhere outside my bedroom window. I hear the slow lilt, weey--ooo-ooo-ooo. Fleeyoo-flute, flute, flute. I imagine him out there, perched on some thin outreach of a tree, floo- floo- floo.
He sounds for the loss of the greatest love I've ever known, for the death of my relationship with Saryn, and if the mourning dove is truly mourning, then tonight I am mourning alongside him.
Weoo, woo, woo, woo.
Weoo, woo, woo, woo.
I miss you so much.
