Well, the "wizard" mantle is indiscriminate. People argue endlessly on this board regarding what constitutes a "robot", but the title of "wizard" is unequivocal. If one is 30 years old or more and still a virgin, he is a wizard. Simple, elegant. I am without a doubt a wizard, but not even God could offer a verdict regarding whether I'm a robot.
Of course, not all wizards wear those robes for the same reason. And those robes span an entire spectrum, from the most immaculate white to the deepest black. Some of us celebrate what we are, some of us are resigned to it, and some of us hate it passionately. Admittedly, I fall into the latter-most category. But I would never assume my experience is universal.
In much the same way, I recognize that not all wizards are what they are for the same reason. Some are, as you suggest, wizards because they're estranged from society. That could certainly result in a man reaching middle age as a virgin.
Of course, one could also be a virgin at the age of 30 because he is incredibly unattractive. He may enjoy the company of others, recognize and appreciate the value of relationships and have no difficulty entering into them....as long as said relationships aren't sexual.
