I suffered much the same thing OP. I'm sorry other peoples' momentary discomfort has put you out of a job. Gossip counts for more than your work ability in the modern workplace, and if you don't participate, you're just a likelier target.
I would get along fine with all the women I ever worked with, if they didn't take offense to my strict prioritization of work over socializing with them. All they'd have to do is not be children who demand to be liked by everyone, but they can do that and have the power to enforce it too.
