The issue here is two different interpretations of the word 'kill'. Conservatives blame murder on a person's murderous intent. Liberals blame the inanimate object used to commit the murder.
To decide which view is more accurate, consider the following:
If a person does not have murderous intent, will he murder someone? Of course not. On the other hand, if a person with murderous intent does not have a gun, will he still commit murder? Impossible to say for sure in any specific case, but it's certainly quite possible. He could stab, bludgeon, poison or use any other variety of methods. Regardless, he will have committed murder because he was driven to commit murder, not because he had a particular tool at his disposal.
