I'm a store manager who only works 4 days a week. Used to be 5 but the owner asked if I could do the job in 4 and have only junior staff work the other 3 days. Was pissed at first but he agreed to raise my regular wage to cover it. I've developed a sixth sense for detecting shop lifters. You can tell who intends to steal just by how they act when you greet them, what aisles they visit and in what order, etc. But I've never had the courage to do anything about it. What should I do when I know someone is stealing?
The official policy is to approach them without getting too close, and talk about the item they're trying to steal. Like asking if they want a basket for x-item or suggesting other things that go with it. This is the problem with inner city convenience stores. Mine is a Sainsbury's set up in an old pub. We have so many issues with fresh meat thefts that we are in the process of getting a security in from 10am to 11pm rather than 3pm to 11pm approved.
Shoplifters in these stores just need to realise we do not have the facilities to catch them in sudden strike thefts like this. If you walk about pretending to be interested while pocketing shit you will probably be noticed but a sudden strike is unpreventable. Work at mcd's as opener. For the last 2 years I've been waking up at 3am for my 4:30am-1pm shift and I'm monday-friday. I also live in a small town of 1800 on a US highway. Its something to get used to. I've enjoyed it. I have no real social life except going to the bar every other night with my only friend, who's moving soon. I actually enjoy my work, it's not super fast paced as the McDonalds in the city, and I don't work with obnoxious ghetto people. It sounds cliche, but the staff I work with feels kind of like a family. Its the only place that I can honestly say that if I left people would genuinely miss me for a little while. No rude people, and I've developed very good customer service skills (i.e sucking up and knowing the right thing to say). Theres people I hate working with, but talking shit about them behind their back to everyone else who hates them is almost worth it.
My life is stagnant.
I'm getting a CDL truck driving apprenticeship for the harvest.
