He was lonely and depressed. As someone who feels similar I can tell you that when you feel isolated from the world you begin to have these thoughts. He wanted to kill himself because he was so damn miserable but he thought he might as well go out with a bang. Just look at his interactions with the girl throughout. When he goes in and tells her he thinks she's a lonely person he's just projecting his own feelings on to her. Just look at the office scenes before hand she doesn't really give the lonely/depressed vibe. And then when she does agree he has zero clue how to interact with people (takes her to the porn theater) and she dumps him. Travis Bickle is a misanthrope. What triggers the idea of shooting Palantine is during that scene where the character played by Scorsese himself says he was going murder his wife with .44 magnum for cheating on him.
He wanted to leave a mark in history and by killing Palantine, he would basically achieve that. Palantine uses the slogan "We are the people!", Travis hates society.
The dating part was just to show that Travis simply can't fit in and doesn't understand what is normal. After the date goes down the drain, he accept that Betsy is "one of them", she is part of the society that he hates.
