Nothing, when you actually are. When I then tell others I'm not, they think I'm weird for speaking like that. I just do my best to avoid speaking, and will just say yes/no/please/thanks and nods.

Its a weird feeling, you really don't get treated the same if you can't talk right. Worse is even non-southerners pick up on my off accent and ask where I'm from and don't believe me when I say I'm from the Mississippi delta. I want to take classes to get a southern dandy accent so I can wear my seersucker or linen and pretend I'm all fancy pants sipping on bourbon. It would hurt less if I didn't have such a romantic view of Southern culture. There's dumbass trailer trash with beautiful accents but they come off trashy as hell. Guess who gets invited to all the reindeer games though?
