I have this friend who committed suicide 2 days ago. I knew he was depressed, but this is where things get weird.

Internet, like drug addiction can be all consuming and people who do not monitor/restrict their access to the internet may find it impossible to begin their assignments, no different to a heroin junkie who, while technically smart, can't pull himself away from the needle long enough to do anything productive. However internet addiction is usually quite cheap so IDK - maybe a porn addiction or camgirl addiction.
I doubt it was prostitutes because they are usually too expensive to take up your time 24/7. Sure you can go into debt but even still not too many banks will lend you enough money for a 24/7 hooker habbit.
Gambling sounds like a strong possibility too OP. Don't dismiss it because he was a smart person. Some of the smartest people I know have fallen for the gambling jew
