Yeah, I think you did the right thing, OP. Violence isn't worth it a lot of the time. Maybe if you're in some extreme situation where you're going to experience intense suffering if you don't hurt someone else. Self-defense falls under that description some of the time, but other times you're not really in any danger and fighting's only going to make everything worse.
What if this guy did have a knife? I don't know where he got it from, since all knives have been outlawed throughout England for a while now. Are there black market utensil dealers? You could've been stabbed with that contraband knife and winded up in a hospital. And who knows where that dirty knife's been? Maybe someone else has used it to stab some gays and junkies and now it's become tainted with the AIDS virus.
Don't feel bad about it, OP. Nobody got whisked away from that club in an ambulance, so that's a victory in my book.

Yeah you did the right thing. Unless something physical is done you don't want to be the one that escalates it to that level. First of all it makes you no better than the chav, second of all it ends the night out best case scenario and results in legal trouble worst case scenario.
Typically I don't fight unless there's unwanted physical contact (it doesn't have to be much, I consider it self defense even if they just push me or posture too much).
Can be a tough call with women though, like everything else. They want you to stand up for them, but the moment you knock someone out they get hysterical.
