Machines aren't bad by definition, but you should incorporate free weights amongst them. Compound lifts build a good foundation of strength, and then add accessories with those compound lifts. I workout at home in peace, so I guess this isn't an issue for me, but I did used to work out in a chain gym for years. You'd be surprised how friendly people can be. I dropped a barbell on my chest once and three guys came over to help me lift it off. They all commented on how they'd done the same thing in the past.
Everyone is there trying to improve their health, physique and all around just be a better, healthier person. People respect you for that.

Well, I hate to say it, but confidence is one of the bigger ones. I started off beta as fuck when I was 16. There's definitely an element of trial and error.
