How did a community that is so cynical, bitter, rabidly-right wing and anti-intellectual spring from a website about an art style so sincere, good-natured and liberal-minded?

Let's see...

Users drifted onto other sites while still using 4chan, but neglected to eliminate the culture that insisted we stay only on 4chan. As a result, a lot of content started drifting. Rage comics were /v/'s thing, trollface too. Because the early community wasn't willing to accept that they were in fact too large to be isolated, they instead chose to implode on themselves harder and harder. That's part 1, that's why the culture is so vicious when people try to talk to each other here, it's leftover from the realization that "THEY" were coming "HERE" to take "OUR" things. Any hint that you don't know something, that you're not caught up, that you're not acting like other people, that you're dissenting in a way that's clearly prevalent somewhere else, and all that digital xenophobia comes rushing in. A lot of attitudes and content that today would be labeled Reddit used to be normal as fuck here, aside from the hugboxing.

/Pol/ is the most liberal-minded community I've ever seen on the internet. From the commonplace of curse words and explicit slang to the atheism and debate-anything-at-all threads, I've never seen anything like it
>>
>>29548618
>>29548907

/pol/ is not liberal or atheist. /pol/ and 4chan were the prime drivers behind the forced fedora meme. They just never shut up about it.

You are considered "autistic" on this website if you have your own firm opinion that is well typed out and doesn't sound like a retard typed it. It's all projection.
>>
>>29548715
>Because the early community wasn't willing to accept that they were in fact too large to be isolated
We're still like that to this day. For some reason everybody wants to think this website is a little hole in the wall for them and like 30 other people, instead of a massive, multi million user place.

Immigration sucks
>>
>>29548945
Do you really think most of /pol/ is seriously religious? I highly doubt it.

Yeah, you'll get insulted, but you will get replies. People will consider your opinion. That's real liberalism

LIBERAL-MINDED. That's the word.
>>
4chan is contrarian as fuck. It likes to be the opposite of what is the status quo.
>>
>>29548715
>A lot of attitudes and content that today would be labeled Reddit used to be normal as fuck here

Very true. If there's one thing that's changed since ~2006, it's that 4chan has become more angry and mean spirited, and less funny, in general.
>>
>>29549015

what is this
>>
>>29548618
Why do you blatantly lie and say that 4chan used to be liberal? It was libertarians that loved Ron Paul. About as far as possible from modern liberalism. The only thing different is it shifted from right-wing libertarianism to right-wing authoritarianism in order to better combat sjw.
>>

2016 4chan is the result of /b/ raiding the fuck out of everything and bringing the cancer here.

There's people who come to 4chan now who unironically hate anime. But they found this site through some raid or through some news article and decided to just stay here. This is pretty much most of /pol/.
>>
Anime appeals to the aesthetic tastes of emotionally fragile men, and popular progressive politics as of late has taken to attacking the tastes and character of emotionally fragile men.
>>
>>29549048
>>29549143

A few years back some anons decided to formally extend an invitation to /stormfront/ to try out /pol/ and see if they liked it just for shits and giggles, and of course they took everything they saw virtually at face value and actually decided to stay. The result is that now even neo-nazis communicate using dank memes.
>>
>>29548715
>A lot of attitudes and content that today would be labeled Reddit used to be normal as fuck here, aside from the hugboxing.

This is seriously true.

I saw some anon saying "le reddit humor xD" when someone made some thread here some days ago about "toilet beans".
It used to be something you'd see on /b/ 10 years ago, but apparently it's "reddit humor" now.
>>
>>29549015

Nice top hat. I remember that from years ago, but still - if people on this website are threatened by what someone types, out come the anger and fedora memes. 4chan is edgy for the sake of being edgy, and edgy for the sake of being contrarian at the same time.
>>
>>29549306
I've been here since 2005 and I think anime is generally a shit art form. No subtle storytelling, bad dubs, shitty over exaggerated reactions, etc. It's garbage. There are a handful of good anime series and the rest is trash.
>>
>>29549379
Damn, i fucking love anime but i'd have to say that i kinda agree with you. Although i will say that anime has the advantage of being able to create any setting imaginable without the constraints of real world locations. Unfortunately most animes dont use this effectively... But when they do, that shit can be moving.
>>
>>29549048
That became more noticeable after Gamergate, when suddenly everything became serious business.

It wasn't only on 4chan. Nearly every other internet community was affected as well.
>>
>>29549026

So if Trump wins will he become the new Obongo or will /pol/ literally turn itself into his internet Gestapo?

>>
>>29549346
Uh, yeah. When something which is popular on 4chan starts gaining popularity outside of 4chan, 4chan abandons it and moves on to something else. That's the way it's always been.

There was a time when people here said shit like "epic fail" unironically, because back then talking like that was something only people in places like 4chan did. Then somebody created "failblog" and by that time people on 4chan wouldn't be caught dead talking like that. That was like 8 fucking years ago. So it goes.
>>
>>29548618

>>
>>29548997

I remember when I first went there in late 2014, the fedora meme was FLOODED onto /pol/.

If you said anything that even remotely did not fit into their autistic redneck white Christian revivalist worldview, you would have dozens of people getting angry and spamming fedora memes at you.

It's still like that today, although nowhere near as intense.
>>
>>29549501
People on 4chan don't like normies. When normies start copying our style, we change our style so we don't talk like normies. Black people do the same thing when white people copy their style. It's about preserving an identity against a powerful culture which is contemptuous of you.

In this day and age you literally can't wear a fedora without both thinking you're a classy men's rights advocating atheist and getting literally everyone to turn and stare at you in the streets and know immediately just what sort of an autist you are.

Even the normies know le euphoric fedoraman when they see him nowadays. That and like half of the fedorameme pics with the I'M AN ATHEIST DEBATE ME text were made completely unironically by the same guys who are in the pictures.
>>

4chan has long been the home to edgy contrarians. Eventually liberal "degeneracy" became the norm, and the edgy contrarian thing to do became being conservative, maybe with some blatant racism added in for extra spice.

In hindsight I realized the exact moment it happened to me in my high school civics class around 09 or so, when I thought "eh, fuck it, I'll be on the Republican side since like two thirds of the class are on the opposite side." If someone told me back then that as a grown-ass man I would unironically vote for Trump I would have probably laughed at them.

4chan has really changed over the years. I would say that the core belief of the majority of the site was sort of anarchist.

I mean, how can you have any other belief system when there's no identity? 4chan was antagonistic and really had no allegiance to any cause. This site was mostly just humor and to poke fun at everyone and everything.

When raids became political or morally-obligated, that's when this site started to transform into it's more conservative state. It really doesn't suit this site.

I'm not sure what's happening anymore. All the boards seem to rehash the same shit over and over. The "memes" are stale and I hate that word ever caught on.

There used to be so much really creative OC and the discussion seemed lively. /r9k/ is fun, but it's still got that bitter virgin taste to it.
>>
>>29551163

4chan is not "conservative" at all though. They just pretend to be to be contrarian.

4chan has, since it's existence, had an entire culture around LITERALLY worshiping women. Porn is a main feature of this site, and there is a site-wide culture around worshiping certain "chan girls" and such. The people here are only conservative because their brains thrive off contrarianism, and they aren't really conservative at all.

We have become this way because anime is a world we want to create but reality is nothing like that. Anime isn't liberal, at least in /pol/ sense, it retains a traditional view on women which is what /r9k/ admires, even handholding is considered lewd.
>>
>>29551209
That's true. It's more that /pol/ has really infested this site with the /stromfront/ bullshit. I mean, I guess we can really blame moot for deleting /new/ all those years ago.

Hell, he even deleted this fucking board and that wreaked havoc on other boards. /adv/ went to shit and never recovered from the /r9k/ problem. It's still s/adv/irgins.
>>
>>29551234
Containment boards are a lie. All you need is for mods to do their fucking job.

This isn't a free speech site anyway. That was the belief or moot, a literal cuckold. I hope hiro brings some Japanese iron-fisted censorship to this place soon.
>>
>>29551263
Containment boards are definitely not a fucking lie. The only proof you need of this fact is when those boards get fucking wiped out.

Everything goes to shit and their bullshit [insert board circlerjerk discussion topic here] spreads to other parts of the site.

You could get rid of the conversation topic, but what fun is that? Containment is better.
>>
>>29551234
