For me, it lasted less than a year. He didn't even see me graduate. Things were moving so fast, like one day I was escorting him to the family and the next I was CPRing him while he drowned in his own blood.

It turned my mom into a hysteric depressed non-functional person, drained our finances so that we're well below poverty line (and in a shit country this is unimaginably poor for first worlders), and killed my chances of ever doing anything since no one gives a shit about someone who has an almost-decade-long black hole in their life and I missed all the chances I would normally have to improve anything. It also had the awesome effect of turning me from a relatively normal and constructive person into someone who sees the elements of decay and entropy in everyone and everything.
All in all, wouldn't recommend.
