Scientists have already done it. It's based entirely on brain chemistry. There are basically two stages:
1. "Infatuation stage": anywhere from 3 months to 2 years, the period when one or both parties are insanely happy thanks to some chemicals their brain makes for them (serotonin, dopamine) as long as they're around their partners. Once this stage is over, the figurative 'spark' either fades out entirely, leading to a breakup, or you move on to stage 2.
2. "companionship stage": your brain starts producing more oxycotin and vasopressin, leading to a strong feeling of attachment but not the same passionate love of the infatuation stage.
