What is so great about this show? Just finished it and it was pretty mediocre. It was a show about music, but no music? Also found the characters bland, not bad but pretty lack-luster. Was just in a waifu thread and people were claiming the main cast like they were remember-able in some way. im usually into moe anime but every single performance of them made me cringe harder than anything. especially the parts where yui literally does not stop talking for ~15 minutes.
the second season thankfully quit that, but instead they dropped the music theme for the most part and just made it a generic slice of life with some light music club bits thrown in.

It's a relaxing slice of life with no drama and lots of cute stuff. The characters are somewhat developed, the animation isn't that bad, and the OST is decent. Don't ask me how it sold as well as it did though, you'd have to ask /a/.

It sounds to me like you just don't understand what the slice of life genre is. The characters being cute and not "doing anything" IS the substance. It's supposed to be like a friend simulator, you come to like the characters and you watch them just living their daily lives because it's like spending time with them. Pathetic? Firstly, I consider SOL to be comprised of many very different kinds of shows. For example, Silver Spoon, a show about a teenage boy who starts at an agricultural boarding school, is an excellent coming of age story. YuruYuri appears to be in the same vein as K-On!, being essentially about cute girls doing cute things, but has a more high-energy, comedic feel, while K-On! eschews the laugh-out-loud humour in favour of something that's a lot more subdued and is just generally pleasant to watch.
It's hard to really quantify how good a show is at being moe. You'll always get lots of people arguing that their favourite show is the best one and K-On!, the old standard of moe SOL, is overrated garbage.
The reason K-On! stands tall in the moe SOL genre, in my opinion, is that the feeling of friendship and cameraderie between the characters is very strong. Some shows seem like they just have a club of cliche characters with only a tenuous connection to each other. Although the characters in K-On! could be considered cliche, the friendship between them feels real and genuine, and I personally find that very heartwarming and cute.

It's not that I don't like slow paced show, hack.sign and LOGH are among my favorite anime.
I just never found the plot very engaging, which it wasn't intended to be, at best it was light comedy, and sadly I'm just not really into that sort of stuff.

I'll have to admit, those aspects are one of the reasons why I was able to go through the whole series. The soundtrack, characters, and story was decent, even though it had some cringe worthy moments. And like a lot of the anons itt have already said, you should of expected brain-dead cutesy stuff from the beginning, which is pretty much the appeal to this show and the genre in general. What you find unappealing is what others find appealing.
