Early CS was whack as fuck and you either didn't play it or simply didn't care about balance. The game was updated for a reason.
You call 1.5 godlike, but 1.6 is just "okay". 1.6 added the famas and galil and tons of bug fixes. That's supposed to be a bad update? Only bad change was the riot shield and that was so bad that it was banned from competitive play almost immediately, it was simply ignored. The new weapons were great additions.

I played on 1.6 and the game is trash. The bullets never go where you aim and people shoot through walls.

1.6 had all types of netcode problems, between 1.5 and 1.6 they messed around with interp and some other things and it really fucked up stuff. 1.6 was fine for lan stuff, pretty much the best version for lan. but online? total mess. famas and galil were basically just a middle ground weapon between ak/m4 and an mp5, they weren't really that significant. the save round money fix was the best improvement they made because you couldn't money fuck the CTs anymore on save rounds. they only did this because shaguar wrote an article about it, so it wasn't even a developer's idea.
