If you haven't talked to him in half a year, he may just be awkward about it himself, and possibly doesn't really want to go because he'll be surrounded by people he can't really talk to for an extended period of time, but he likes you and doesn't want to hurt your feelings, so he said yes. Ask him something along the lines of, "Hey, are you sure that you want to go on the trip, because I would like it if you went, but it's really totally fine if you don't."

Just ask if he is sure he wants to go on the trip, how you want him to go, but how it's OK if he doesn't. Be nonchalant. Also, I'll get messages from close friends and not respond for hours; sometimes people just don't feel like responding immediately for whatever reason.
