I believe that human sociality as a part of everyday life, was the original intent of a 'god' of some sort. THIS. I actually agree with you now. To me, the constant use of music as background noise only goes to show that most people don't appreciate it as an experience on its own.
To me, the best music experiences are when I can just lie down with headphones on and listen to an album all the way through. I used to do it once a day as my break between classes and dinner, and I had another phase of doing it when I went to bed stoned.
My tastes aren't even that "patrician," but by your standards, which I think I largely share, it's worth something to let the whole album tell its story and actually pay attention to the sonic experience instead of muddling it with other shit. You wouldn't watch a movie while doing other things, right?
I dunno. Maybe it's the synesthesia, but I really don't understand how music can just be background noise to people, or even sound in general. I was actually having that exact thought earlier today and several times over the course of the last month. It fucking blows me away that people can have the radio on in a car as background noise, hold a conversation, and drive, all at once.
