Could someone redpill me on commas and semicolons, /r9k/?

Commas are a good way to list, show, and give examples of things.
They're also a good way to add a thought/summary to your sentence, just like that.
Semicolons are exactly what you see. A period and a comma, so you can say they're something in between. They're used for adding that one thought that could be another sentence; many authors use them in that way.

Commas separate dependent from independent clauses, unless used with a coordinating conjunction.
Semicolons join two independent clauses.
