As being similar to the person in your story, I can assure you that your assumption is correct. I think it does indeed have something to do with autism, but If I never left the house, ever, without wearing my sweatshirt (or hoodie whatever you call it.) The hoodie is really robot piece of clothing. The ability to hide your face behind the hood and almost drown out the outside world is extremely reassuring.
The reason we wore those thick hoodies in 90+ degree weather is not because we chose to, but he had to. It was our protection almost. It made people like me feel much more at ease with being out in public. Like taking meds for anxiety before some sort of presentation or whatever. It's a necessity.

I only carry my wallet, keys and phone, but they flop around and half the time, the pockets are too small to safely carry everything.
