Free weights are best for working out your chest, in fact free weights are best for just about anything. On /fit/ they'll all advise you to stay away from machines where possible
But yeah just go in with a routine in mind, know what you want to do and then go for it. Try and vary your workouts a bit too - don't just do the same routines every time you go. Your muscles will adapt to it.
It's called muscle confusion, varying the lifts you do is good.
Also remember to warm up and stretch. Don't jump in at your max weight - for instance, say you're going to bench press 40kg - start with the bar, then add 10 on the next set, then another 10.
