Personally I'm trying to get more into the software radio stuff. You can buy an adapter that lets you see the radio spectrum on the computer, then use other programs to do stuff. I want to set it up so that I can download pictures from the weather satellites, but I have to get a proper antenna setup to do that.
Most hams are older, geeky men that just play around with electronics in general. Once you get your license you can join the local radio club and they'll probably have a radio call-in once a week and a repeater that they always monitor. I never get on because I'm not really interested in talking to people, let alone older guys, but if you're interested in tech fields its probably some of the best networking you can ask for.
Getting a license is pretty cheap and easy, just look up some technicians youtubes videos, read through the book a few times, practice the question pool for a week or two and you're set. I think its worth it, even if you don't have anything in mind to use it for.
