Sims 1 lacked many vital concepts which made the game unbearable after the later ones, aging for one. Sims 2 also lacked feautures but they were more of a matter of taste than being vital to the game. For example I always focused on one household so the whole "you can play the whole town without loading" meme didn't get to me.
Sims 2 was also the game when monatization was not as brutal as in the latter games. I think stuff packs were decents and expansion packs had good content. Only few Sims 1 exp packs (making magic) suprass sims 2 quality. Sims 3 and 4 became a dlc-0.99$ fest.
Also I feel nostalgic about the mid 00s era, which I beleive sims 2 represented better than sims1 with late 90s or sims3 with late 00's.

Nah, sims 1 music was more iconic and better, as an avid sims2 defender even I can admit that. Sims 2 had too much music for its sake, 50 mediocre songs is not better than 5 awesome iconic build mode music. They also began to the first process of "monetization" by having celebrities singing in simlish.

Problem with both is that it overloads you with many stuff, features etc. Sims should be tasted bit by bit imho. You play the base game, then you play the expansion when it comes out.
I think this is one of the reasons why people who return to the games don't like it as before. Probably due to the fact they are overloaded with stuff pakcs-expansion features etc.
Though installing base game + expansion pack one by one is a tedious process, though I believe you will better enjoy both sims if you gradually increase the stuff thats in it.
