How old were you when you got into anime/otaku culture? Do you regret it?

13/14 here

No, but i'm glad I didn't get into it earlier as i'm sure I wouldn't have been able to hide my powerlevel and would've embarrassed myself.

Hell no, if anything it almost saved my life by postponing the day I catch the bus which might be soon anyway. What I regret is not getting into it earlier but I was too poor and had strict parenting so I could barely touch a computer.
>>
like when I was 5 years old senpai. Now I'm 32.

And yes anime literally kept me from killing myself over the years.

i regret 4chan turning me into a cynical little shit more than anything

I guess around 14, but not seriously until about 19. Easily one of the better decisions I've made.

I don't regret it.

I mean I been watching animu since I was 8 or younger.
but the age I first dl an episode (which is when I consider I went full weeb) was prob 13

Around 11-12 when I saw Toonami on Adult Swim.

Nope

13, started watching Death Note and thought it was badass. Wen to my library picked up a bunch of edgy manga (mostly Hellsing) and read them all the time in school (shy weeb chick devolved a crush on me too, but was too autistic to notice and she never made a move). Stopped for a while before diving into it full force at 16 / 17 and sunk all my free time into for almost two years. I watch / read way less now, but I don't regret it. It was either this or video games, both are autistic so it doesn't make a difference. Also it turned me onto hentai / doujins so that's pretty good I guess.

I got into it during the early 00s with the first Toonami wave.

It fucked with my brain a lot and I'm pretty sure Berserk/Hellsing/Evangelion/End of Evangelion and all the other fucked up anime I watched gave me some kind of PTSD.

Seeing that shit is intense when you are an impressionable teenager. Still it made me feel alive and I miss talking about "deep" anime with my anime friends. Probably the best time of my life.

For those who got into it late, how did you come to find and enjoy it?

For me, it was Cowboy Bebop, Black Lagoon and Stand Alone Complex. In my country, there was a late night anime block on the Sci-Fi channel called Animax. When I was attending High School I would stay up 'til midnight and catch episodes every week. They were, sadly enough, some of the best times of my life. I have a lot of fond memories of staying up all night binging on weebshit.

15. And even then it was only to give a hyperweeb classmate of mine moral support as they started our school's anime club.

I hung around for a few meetings to piss away time. Holy shit was that a cringe cluster.

Playing Katawa Shoujo which got my interest in weeb stuff started, and then a few more classic VNs like Clannad and Kanon. From there it was just consuming more and more anime until I got way too deep into the rabbit hole.

I honestly never got into anime/otaku culture.
Watched quite some anime ever since I was 15, but never really got into the whole otaku trend. Just didn't appeal to me that much.
>>
I don't regret getting into anime/manga but I think I do regret getting into visual novels/hentai games tbqh, I'm way too far off into the deep end now
>>
6 maybe? I was watching DBZ for years. Around the age of 9 my sister told me DBZ was called an "anime." That there were more shows like DBZ out there. She even showed me her favorite anime Fruits Basket.

Once I watched Fruits Basket I started going further into weeb shit. I went online and watched GTO, Green Green, School Rumble, and a shit ton of romantic comedies.
Nowadays I don't watch a lot of anime since I'm a wageslave. I only watch Jojo, Hero Academia, and One Piece currently.

4chan got me into it, I somehow landed on /hr/ first of all, then I drifted to /g/ and all the cute girls got me curious, investigated some more and here I am. I had no cable and no friends so this was the only way.

The first series that got me to stick to it were Kaiji, Watamote, Hellsing and Eva, followed by moe/comedy like YrYr and Milky Holmes.

Oh and watamote in particular helped me in a very dark period of my life, I've only read the manga cause the anime came later. It was when my sleep schedule first went to shit and I found real comfort in staying up late reading it and being comfy in my room at 4am. Good times.

29 and I'm now 31.

No, absolutely not. The only regret is not getting into it earlier in my life. I grew up isolated in the suburbs without internet so as a kid and teen I would only have access to mainstream kids' shows like DBZ, Pokemon, Digimon and sometimes whatever was at my local video store, not even Blockbuster. I did have some translated Dragon ball mangas that were surprisingly mainstream - and those were also my first (cartoon) titties.

Even when I was a little older and was fully aware of anime and potentially had access to it I was just like "haha you fags and chinese cartoons" and thought I was too good for it.

Then I got older and depressed and lazy, but anime saved my life. I'll definitely be at next year's con.

Excluding DBZ and Pokemon, I got super into IY on Adult Swim when I was, like, 14 or 15. Those fucking gooks and their beautiful romantic cartoons; it unfortunately completely changed my life, and had the effect of a stick being tossed into the spokes of my social skills, which were already bent out of shape as it was.

It would be an exaggeration to say that anime ruined my life, but it certainly did not help my already concerning situation. I regret the fuck of out it. That being said, however, I'm still into anime/manga/ect to this day, and I'm not going to stop, and if I could live it all over again I would almost certainly only watch more anime than I did.

mid-00s when anime was starting to get huge

don't watch anymore because the material is to diluted. it doesn't have themes drawing from real life experience just trying to 1-up previous material and pandering.
>>
Been watching anime and knowing it since around 2000/2001 as a 10 year old. Went to my first convention in 2004 and never stopped since. Normies have invaded otaku culture and turned it in to shit. Seeing the people who would clown you in middle school for watching anime and talking about it with the asian kids... are the same people post high school talking about having a crunchy roll account.

It also didn't help that anime's barrier of entry for non-toonami stuff use to be much higher ( VHS fansubs/ 30$ DVD's/ ) to ( Watch anime websites/ crunchy roll ) .

13/14

I've been familiar with mainstream stuff like the Pokemon anime/DBZ/Naruto ever since I was little. It wasn't until I discovered the slice-of-life genre that I really got hooked; it just clicked for me. Some of my favorites are Haruhi, Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni, and Kiniro Mosaic.

I don't really regret it, it has never been a huge part of my life anyways. I think it's good to be interested in something that's a bit "out there", if anything, it will broaden your horizons.
>>
I got into it when I was like 11 or 12, I remember watching Sailor Moon and Sonic on Saturday mornings when I was young. I also remember going into a bookstore with my dad when I was like 13 or 14 and picking up my first Shounen Jump for the first time, that's where I read the first chapter of Naruto translated in English and then I found out Naruto was coming to America and it sort of just blossomed from there.

I later got into Toonami which really broadened my anime horizon since Toonami ran TONS of anime shows, I watched Toonami for like two or three years and still remember some of the old stuff they use to show like Big O. Also another TV block that got me into anime was Adult Swim, and I mean the ORIGINAL Adult Swim, the new one is kind of shit but the old one was comfy as fuck and use to show anime and adult comedy cartoons like Home Movies and good comfy shit.

That's pretty much how I got into anime, I just took an interest in it and eventually met other people around my age who were into anime and it just kept growing and growing as an interest. I'm now 23 years old and I've attended several anime conventions, I've also cosplayed and was in an anime club for four years at my high school, I also attended anime club at my college for a couple years until I stopped attending because the people were toxic and the club was full of drama. But I still got on boards like /a/ and discuss manga and anime with people on the internet, I also talk with strangers about anime in public if I can find any anime fans in public who don't mind talking about it.

I mean, I'm pretty fucking weeaboo. I wanted to live in Japan when I got older though I doubt that will happen. Also I've realized that's not really the best idea anyway, I'd still like to vacation in Japan though someday and I love Asian culture and shit so I'm probably still pretty fucking weeaboo and like Japanese culture and what not.
>>
>>29382258
I find it hard to believe that a FIVE year old watched anime, and then a couple years later you were already reading manga and VNs. I hate to call you a liar but I find it very hard to believe, the youngest people I've heard reading manga and watching anime are probably 11 or 12 but anything under 10 is kind of absurd. Five years old is very hard to believe as well, I guess a seven or eight year old could see manga as a comic so if you look at it in that sense then it's not weird to see seven and eight year olds reading manga I suppose since they probably read comics at that age.

What fucking anime were you watching when you were five? Do you even remember? I can't remember shit when I was five.
>>

Like 13. Kinda because I might have gotten laid in high school by trying to do shit get fit than play dota and watch Index. A girl that hinted at me the most was one I still like but it's easier to have no responsibilities and live by yourself if you grow up in a household like mine. Which makes you bitter towards women by living with 3 female borderlines.
>>
>>29379670
If playing Yu-Gi-Oh and shitty flash games on Newgrounds count, then probably around 13-14. I watched anime passively and drew a lot of DBZ OC in my childhood too so it could be even earlier. I was pretty much pleb tier until 18 though when I got my own laptop and started watching "classics" and eventually seasonal shows almost every day.

I started watching in 2000 (I was 16), through the Internet and video rentals, but only haphazardly. It probably wasn't until 2011 or 2012 that I was watching it with some regularity. 2013 is when I bought my first figure. This year I deleted almost all of my porn, and most of my other 3D stuff. Progress is being made.

I stumbled into anime without knowing what it was, and kept watching it for years without knowing what it was. At the time I was more into live action Japanese movies and shows, and anime was just an extension of those. Anime slowly became the priority, and I eventually brached off to doujinshi and other doujin works, visual novels, Touhou, figures, sakuga, and whatever else. I read almost no manga though.

It's great and I wouldn't have it any other way.

I've never attended a con or knowingly spoken to anyone in real life who has any interest in these things.

>>29382595
There's something like ten shows this season that clearly draw from real life, and pandering is a bogeyman that doesn't exist.

I started when I was 15 and definitely dropped out of it when I graduated high school. I watched K On a few years ago but never picked up anything else. Although I did read the Watamote manga, so when it got an anime I also watched that. Rewatched K On for the third or so time and decided to see what else was out there which led me to watching Beck. Then I got into seasonal shit and anime in general and it very quickly became a daily thing.

I was 13. Anime itself is not the issue but I definitely regret getting into otaku culture. At first I sort of looked at weaboos and the type to be "2D only" as losers that I would never turn into. Weeb = weeaboo = wapanese = wannabe Japanese.

Otaku is a contested term but the two basic definitions are someone who is a devoted fan of anime, manga, games etc., and someone who is an expert fan of a particular topic like trains, military hardware, idols or computers.

Got into it when I was a kid with shows like Yu-Gi-Oh! and manga like Naruto and Bleach, then stopped caring when I was around 15.

Then in 11th grade when I started really invested in escapism I started rereading manga and watching shows.

I think one of the first anime I watched as a teenager was NGE, and it's been my favorite since then, despite the fact that I've watched many more anime that could be considered better.

That's a pretty high weeaboo power level you got there anon, I didn't get into anime until I was 11 or 12 and I didn't start reading manga until I was 13 or 14.

Not trying to bash you but that's pretty disgusting if you started getting into anime at five years old, I understand reading manga at a young age because it's just comic books and most eight and nine year olds read comic books so it's not weird I suppose.

Also One Piece aired in America for the first time in 2004 so you're probably 22, but damn man you must be a mega weeaboo if you started that young. I bet you have figurines and body pillows, the works. You're the type of person to go to an anime convention and spend $500 on trinkets and what not.

Saber is cute but more Tumblr if anything, I did like her suit though. Damn makes me wish I could rock a black suit the way she did, but let's me honest who the fuck wears a BLACK TIE with a BLACK SHIRT.

That's really autistic to wear black on top of black because you can't even see the tie unless it's a darker color I suppose, most people wear a colorful tie or some shit. I think it looks autistic to walk around in BLACK EVERYTHING, you should a bit of color, though blonde hair goes good with black, it clashes nicely.
>>
Maybe 13? When naruto first started airing, my big brother and his friends would gather up in his apartment to watch it and I watched it with them. It got me curious.
He also then introduced me to 4chan when it became a thing. In my youngling years I didnt post or anything, didnt even know how to. So basically I was fucked from the getgo.

Thesedays I barely watch anime as most of its just fucking shit and I hate weebs and the general "otaku culture". I used to be able to watch prettymuch any show on earth. From random serious anime to the generic harem shit. Now it has to be something truly special for me to even consider watching it. The last shows I enjoyed were mushishi and jormungand. Before that sayonara zetsubou sensei and haruhi. Good stuff.

I do mildly regret getting into the weeb shit, but mainly due to the cringe that most people into that stuff cause. I dont want to be associated with those shitlords.

My roommates laughed their asses off at first calling me a huge weeb but its funny how shit changes. The last 4 or 5 months they themselves get excited whenever one arrives because they're wanting to try whatever candy or snacks got shipped. On a side note these things are pretty crazy sometimes. Can confirm, I grew up watching sailor moon on USA Network and got really big into it from middle school on up. I was obsessed with characters like the Sailor Starlights, Ranma, and Nuriko and it really fed my gender-bending delusions. I grew up to be a sexually confused gender dysphoric nutter :(

Not animes fault though that autistic people latch onto it. Its really a beautiful medium and at least half of fans are relatively healthy and normal people who will marry and reproduce.

When I was 21 I accidentally saw a few seconds of an anime while lazily switching tv channels waiting for lunch.

I don't remember the actual scene, but it was Godai who had a great occasion to tell Kyoko his feelings... and wasted it.

I was so triggered by that failed guy, I switched tv channel again, but a few seconds later came back to Godai and Kyoko to check if he tried again.

Nope.

Some 15 minutes later the episode ended, and I found myself still standing there and swearing at Godai (yes, I found myself so into that thing, I didn't even bother to grab a chair). While I never had a thing for love stories and unrequited love, since that day I knew I *had* to follow it to see how the story developed.

Weeks later, while explaining something to a coworker, in a low voice I added something like: "like Kyoko". I don't know why I did a remark only understandable to someone who watched the very same show, and I didn't have the slightest hint that he was actually into anime and into it.

In fact, he immediately added: "and Sailor Jupiter as well". Arrgh. Two closeted otakus just happened to meet and talk. I nodded. I didn't watch it, save for a single episode (sufficient to decide that I didn't like it), but to me it was definitely normal that someone could enjoy it.

All this happened sometime in 1995. We parted just there, and never met again. Since then, I knew that being an otaku is not wrong. It is wrong to not to be one.
