Anyone else find it weird how the mage "class" (or just magic in general) in majority of MMOs is very powerful and flexible, yet in runescape being a pure mage of any kind is completely worthless?
in the normal spellbook, the only spell worth anything is Teleblock, the actual elemental ones are dogshit
even using ancients, I don't recall ever seeing someone just get barraged to death, you'd still have to use some side weapon most of the time
and lunar is just utility/money making skills
magic is pretty damn bad as a primary focus, unless RS3 added a new spellbook that isn't shit

But when I stopped playing RS for like a year all my work had pretty much become redundant, it was like I hadn't even played in the first place. It's not like RS3 is "My account is good and will forever remain good because the servers will always be up". New stuff comes out, your character becomes crap (or there's like 10,000 people who are maxed which makes it less impressive)
Been playing since '01. I think new RS is nice for people getting into it today (or within the last 5 years), but it's not my jam.
Is RS3 different enough from 07/08 runescape that someone who quit back then would find it new/fun?

Yeah but achievements aren't as impressive. As >>29363071 said, you can get a ton of 'free' xp from paying for some spinning wheel thing. There's double xp weekend. I see someone with 99 mining and think "Fuck, that used to be good", nowadays it's not even remotely impressive unless you're 99 maxed in everything.

It's worth noting that euphoria also laments Mists of Pandaria as the best WoW expansion, followed by WotLK. The reason so many people here prefer to go back to 07/Vanilla or BC is because they were better designed games than the flashy casualized derivative garbage that they turned into later on.

I was ranked top 100 about 4 years ago. Now I'm 20000. Which means 20k players in the last 4 years have easily gotten more than 25m fishing xp.
Nothing is impressive in RS3 these days. You can play it because it's going to stick around, that's fine, but my account is basically worthless for taking a small break.

I used to just afk shark fishing while studying, reading, playing WoW back in the day.
Not the fastest method but it made me cash. I really don't know how much time I lost just fishing sharks, but it's a depressingly high amount.

I started playing in 06, it is what I remember. And I do feel nostalgic when I see it, but going back to it now is a complete eye sore. It feels so outdated and clunky. I don't even find Runescape including RS3 in general to be a fun or enjoyable game. I've just invested a decade into it so I still come back to it every once in a while.
Almost everything is a tedious annoying grind, and that's why it's my most played game with 1000+ hours put into it. It's like crack, it's awful, but it's addictive and you can't quit. I usually play it for 2 months straight with long 6-12 months breaks, and every time I come back there's something entirely new and I feel lost. I've been thinking for the last few days about playing it again, but it's been 6+ months since I last played it and I'm scared to see what else has been added for me to tear my hair out over.

Man I love Runescape. I've been playing it for 15 years, and I respect that games need to modernise themselves in order to attract fanbases, sort of like WoW.

Old School RS is a game which is a decade outdated and filled with cancerous teenagers.
